The FCC’s *First Report and Order*, issued in September, allows digital FM stations to adopt this technology without experimental authorization, helping balance analog protection and digital performance. Press Communications argues that digital FM signals could interfere with adjacent analog broadcasts, warranting stricter oversight. However, Xperi contends that the petition lacks real-world evidence, noting that asymmetric sideband operations have been tested for over 15 years without credible interference complaints. Xperi also disputes the validity of an RF System Services study cited by Press Communications, arguing its findings are based on flawed off-air measurements. “The Commission should dismiss and/or deny the Press Petition,” Xperi states, emphasizing that added regulations would slow digital FM growth without clear benefits. The FCC has not yet issued a final ruling on the matter.
