Katherine Maher defends NPR’s compliance amid FCC investigation.

NPR CEO Katherine Maher reaffirmed the network’s adherence to FCC regulations amid an ongoing probe into its sponsorship practices, stating, “We feel really confident that we have worked throughout the years to comply with FCC guidelines.” Speaking with Semaphore Media’s Max Tani, Maher emphasized NPR’s transparency and editorial oversight, dismissing speculation that the inquiry is politically motivated. She addressed concerns about NPR’s perceived bias, explaining that local stations tailor programming to community needs. Maher, drawing on her Wikimedia Foundation experience, stressed, “It’s about being trustworthy versus assuming trust.” Rejecting the notion of shifting solely to digital to bypass FCC oversight, she asserted, “I would never ever give up our broadcast network.” Maher highlighted NPR’s efforts to strengthen collaboration between national and local newsrooms, ensuring diverse perspectives. As the investigation unfolds, she remains committed to NPR’s role in delivering trusted journalism to millions of listeners nationwide.
