Federal and state authorities have arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson in the shooting death of conservative activist and Salem Media host Charlie Kirk, and he is being held without bail at the Utah County Jail. President Donald Trump first disclosed the arrest Friday morning on Fox News; Utah Governor Spencer Cox confirmed it at a subsequent press conference.
Robinson was taken into custody Thursday night on suspicion of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, and obstruction of justice. Authorities said he is believed to have acted alone.
Cox said key evidence includes engravings on bullets recovered from a rifle believed to have been used in the attack, as well as messaging-app exchanges attributed to Robinson that a roommate provided to law enforcement. Investigators also cited statements Robinson reportedly made to a family friend after the shooting.
According to officials, Robinson’s father recognized him in surveillance images and, working with a pastor, encouraged his son to surrender. Authorities have not said whether Robinson is cooperating with investigators.
The investigation remains active, and formal charges are expected early next week. Trump has said he wants the shooter to face the death penalty.
