As broadcasters rally on Capitol Hill, the Local Radio Freedom Act (LRFA) has been reintroduced in the Senate by Senators John Barrasso ®-WY) and Maggie Hassan (D-NH), with 18 co-sponsors. A House version, backed by 114 members, was introduced in February. The LRFA opposes the American Music Fairness Act, which would impose new performance royalties on AM/FM broadcasters. Senator Barrasso warned that such fees could force stations to cut programming, stating, “For decades, radio stations and the recording industry have enjoyed a mutually beneficial relationship: free airplay for free promotion.” Senator Hassan emphasized radio’s community role, saying, “We will keep working to ensure that our local radio stations continue providing vital information and entertainment.” NAB President Curtis LeGeyt praised the bipartisan effort, adding, “Their support will help ensure that local radio stations can continue serving our communities for years to come.” Broadcasters view the resolution as crucial to their industry’s survival.
