The Federal Communications Commission Media Bureau has initiated an inquiry into the current state of sports broadcasting. The commission is asking for public comments regarding the ongoing shift of live sporting events from free over-the-air broadcasting to subscription streaming platforms. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr explained that live sports traditionally attract advertisers to local broadcasters, which subsequently helps fund local news operations. The commission wants to know if the fragmentation of sports media rights is harming consumers or preventing local stations from fulfilling their public interest obligations.
National Association of Broadcasters President Curtis LeGeyt welcomed the review, noting that local stations need a fair opportunity to secure premium sports rights. He also advocated for updating outdated ownership restrictions to help broadcasters remain competitive.
