Small broadcasters expressed relief after the FCC clarified that a new $1,000-per-day penalty for failing to update contact information does not apply to most radio stations. Confusion arose last week following a Public Notice regarding the “Robocall Mitigation Database” (RMD), which warned of steep fines for entities that failed to update their FCC Registration Number (FRN) details within 10 days.
The announcement caused a panic that overwhelmed the Commission’s website on Friday as licensees rushed to check their records. However, the FCC issued a subsequent clarification stating that the strict daily fines apply specifically to voice service providers required to file in the RMD, not to standard broadcast licensees. Despite the reprieve from the daily fine, the Commission emphasized that all FRN holders are still required to keep their contact email and address current in the CORES system.
