13 public radio stations drawn into FCC advertisement inquiry.

The FCC, led by Chair Brendan Carr, has requested 13 NPR-affiliated public radio stations, including WBUR in Boston and KPCC in Los Angeles, to submit sponsorship records as part of a broader investigation into potential violations of federal advertising regulations. The probe, covering around 1,500 NPR and PBS stations, examines whether underwriting announcements have crossed into prohibited commercial advertising. Carr suggested that evolving media landscapes may no longer justify federal funding for public broadcasting. Tesla CEO Elon Musk backed the effort, posting “Defund NPR” on X, aligning with a House Subcommittee inquiry led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. NPR CEO Katherine Maher defended the network, stating, “We feel really confident that we have worked throughout the years to comply with FCC guidelines.” The results of the inquiry could impact Congressional debates on taxpayer support for public broadcasting. Stations must respond to the FCCÕs request by March 31.
