Two Bangor radio stations formerly owned by Stephen King are set to return under new ownership, with part of the sale benefitting a local nonprofit fighting food insecurity. After announcing the closure of WKIT, WZON, and WZLO in December due to financial struggles, King sold WKIT for $500,000, while WZON and WZLO remained unsold—until now. Jay Hanson’s Mix Maine Media has acquired WZON and WZLO for $125,000, with $75,000 of the purchase price going to Heart of Maine United Way. “We have more and more people than ever reaching out to us and our partners to receive support,” said CEO Shirar Patterson, emphasizing the impact of the donation. The funds will be distributed over three years once the FCC approves the sale. The agreement also includes cost-sharing for removing existing broadcast towers, ensuring the stations’ transition under new ownership while supporting a critical community cause.
