The National Association of Broadcasters warned that the FCC’s decision to begin an early review of licenses held by eight ABC-owned television stations could create instability throughout the broadcast industry.
The dispute centers on an FCC investigation into diversity, equity, and inclusion policies at The Walt Disney Company and its ABC television division. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said the agency is examining whether Disney’s practices comply with federal regulations governing broadcast licensees.
NAB described the early-review process as “nearly unprecedented” and said accelerating license scrutiny years before normal renewal deadlines could inject political and regulatory uncertainty into the industry. Disney said it would respond formally to the FCC by late May.
The controversy is being closely watched by broadcasters because FCC licenses are central to station valuations, financing, mergers, and ownership transfers. Even radio groups not directly involved could face increased uncertainty if the commission expands aggressive early-review tactics.
