Elon Musk, Tesla CEO and head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has called to “Defund NPR. It should survive on its own,” following claims of biased news coverage. The House Subcommittee on DOGE has summoned NPR CEO Katherine Maher for a March hearing, led by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), to investigate allegations that NPR and PBS ignored stories unfavorable to the Biden administration. Greene argues taxpayer-funded media must ensure objective reporting, echoing criticism from former NPR editor Uri Berliner, who accused NPR of catering to liberal audiences. NPR responded, “We welcome the opportunity to discuss the critical role of public media in delivering impartial, fact-based news.” FCC Chairman Brendan Carr also questioned NPR’s funding, stating, “I do not see a reason why Congress should continue sending taxpayer dollars to NPR and PBS.” Maher defended NPR’s practices, asserting confidence in their compliance with FCC regulations and commitment to public service.
