Music labels propose rules for AI chart eligibility.

Major record companies including Sony Music, Universal Music, and Warner Music Group jointly proposed a unified framework governing how music made with generative artificial intelligence can qualify for official music charts. The guidelines establish clear boundaries between human creativity and purely synthetic or unauthorized AI tracks, while also establishing protections against artificial stream manipulation.

Under the three core criteria outlined in the proposal, an AI-assisted track is only eligible for chart inclusion if it relies on legally authorized AI models, represents a substantially human-made creative effort, and does not involve fraudulent stream or chart inflation.

The proposed principles arrive as AI-generated songs continue to flood streaming services, often using models trained on copyrighted artist catalogues without authorization. For commercial radio programmers, music directors, and station owners, chart eligibility rules directly influence playlist decisions and audience demand. As official music charts adopt these standards, radio stations can clearer distinguish between legitimate commercial releases and unauthorized synthetic tracks when making airplay choices and building local music rotations.
