A small Kentucky AM radio station has lost its FCC license after failing to pay just over $9,000 in regulatory fees and related penalties. The Federal Communications Commission officially canceled the license for WMMA (1480 AM) in Owensboro after repeated attempts to collect the overdue amount went unanswered. The commission cited non-payment of regulatory fees dating back several years and warned that continued delinquency would trigger license revocation.
WMMA, which had operated with a sports talk format and limited local programming, had been on the FCC’s “red light” list due to delinquent debt. That status bars stations from receiving agency action, including renewals or technical changes, until outstanding balances are cleared. The station’s license had been in a pending renewal state when the FCC moved to terminate it for non-compliance.
FCC policy allows broadcasters to enter payment plans or seek waivers under certain conditions, but agency records show WMMA’s licensee, Owensboro Media Group, failed to respond to multiple notices and did not contest the debt. The $9,087 in question includes unpaid annual regulatory fees, late fees, and interest.
While relatively rare, license cancellations for financial non-compliance have increased slightly in recent years as the commission has moved to enforce its collection powers more aggressively. The FCC reiterated that regulatory fees help fund the agency’s operations and are legally required from all licensees.
Local residents and former advertisers expressed surprise, noting that WMMA had reduced its on-air activity in recent months but had not publicly indicated any financial difficulties. The loss of the license means the station cannot legally return to the air unless the owner reapplies and resolves the outstanding debts—a process that could prove more costly than the original fee.
The case serves as a cautionary tale for small broadcasters struggling with tight margins and limited staffing. The FCC has encouraged station owners to maintain up-to-date contact information and to respond promptly to all communications regarding license status and fee obligations.
