The Federal Communications Commission has confirmed that the Communications Security, Reliability, and Interoperability Council will be officially rechartered by the end of March 2026. This council is tasked with addressing critical infrastructure issues that affect local broadcasters, including the mitigation of “malicious SIM farms” and reducing the causes of “sunny day” communication outages that can disrupt local station operations.
While the commission is currently focused on international wireless standards for 2027, the rechartering of this council is a priority for Chairman Brendan Carr’s administration to ensure the resiliency of the national emergency alert system. The council will also investigate the security of submarine cables and the expansion of multimedia availability for 911 services, which integrate with local broadcast emergency protocols.
