Catsimatidis urges return to trusted news.

Red Apple Media owner John Catsimatidis called for a renewed focus on trustworthy journalism as 77WABC received the 2025 Distinguished Service Award from the Fair Media Council during the Folio Awards luncheon. Reflecting on the station’s mission, Catsimatidis said, “92% of the American people believed what Walter Cronkite said, and I think news has to get back to that situation, and that’s what we’re doing at WABC.”

His remarks underscore growing concerns about declining public trust in media. A 2024 survey by Katz Media found that radio remains the most trusted platform among U.S. voters. Eighty percent rated radio as trustworthy or very trustworthy—five points higher than newspapers, 13 points above magazines, and 23 points ahead of television. Social media was viewed with the most skepticism, earning trust from just 25% of respondents.

The study revealed notable differences in media trust based on political affiliation. Democrats showed higher overall trust in traditional outlets, particularly newspapers. Republicans, by contrast, expressed broad distrust of mainstream media but still gave AM/FM radio strong marks for credibility, with 78% saying they trust it. Independents rated radio even higher, at 80%. This made AM/FM the only platform trusted by a majority of voters across all political groups.

The Distinguished Service Award recognizes 77WABC’s contributions to American media over the past century and its current influence in national news and talk formats. The Folio Awards are considered a benchmark of media excellence, with winners selected through a detailed and impartial judging process.

Since acquiring the station in 2019, Catsimatidis has focused on enhancing its local news operations and expanding its roster of talk talent. He has also been a vocal advocate for the preservation of AM radio, particularly its role in public safety during emergencies.

By invoking the legacy of Walter Cronkite, Catsimatidis is urging broadcasters to embrace a model of journalism grounded in fairness, credibility, and public service. His comments come at a time when many Americans are searching for media outlets they can trust, and he believes WABC is stepping into that space. “That’s what we’re doing,” he said, “and we’re proud of it.”
