The automotive category, traditionally a bread-and-butter vertical for local radio, is undergoing a significant strategy shift toward programmatic advertising in 2026. In an interview published Thursday, an executive from The Trade Desk highlighted that auto dealers are moving away from “vanity metrics” like clicks and impressions, focusing instead on connecting ad spend to actual vehicle sales data. This shift allows dealers to target potential buyers much earlier in their purchasing journey, rather than just blasting a wide net during sales events.
This evolution challenges local radio sales teams to upgrade their pitch. Dealers are no longer satisfied with general reach; they want attribution models that prove a listener walked onto the lot. The executive noted that while newspapers and traditional broadcast spots were once the default, the precision of programmatic audio allows for more efficient spending. To retain these critical accounts, radio managers are advised to bundle their over-the-air inventory with robust digital attribution tools that can compete with the granularity offered by DSPs (Demand Side Platforms).
