Audacy: host-read ads drive stronger consumer response.

A new study from Audacy highlights the power of on-air talent in driving consumer action, revealing that host-read advertisements significantly outperform traditional audio ads in both attention and effectiveness. According to the research, listeners are 67% more likely to consider purchasing a product after hearing a recommendation from a trusted radio or podcast host.

Audacy’s analysis builds on insights from Jacobs Media’s Techsurvey, which found that nearly two-thirds of radio listeners tune in specifically for the personalities behind the mic. This loyalty presents a major advantage for advertisers. Deepika Das, Audacy’s Senior Manager of Research and Insights, explains that endorsements from hosts often feel more like friendly advice than traditional advertising—creating a unique level of trust and engagement.

The study shows that broadcast radio listeners are 2.7 times more likely to notice ads read by hosts compared to pre-recorded commercials. In the podcast space, this effect is even stronger: listeners are five times more likely to pay attention when the ad comes directly from the show’s host.

“Ads delivered by an audio host get more of my attention than recorded commercials,” Das notes, emphasizing that host-led content builds authenticity and emotional resonance. This trust translates into real-world results, with a 67% increase in purchase intent following a host-read ad.

Audacy also shared a case study to underscore this approach. In a campaign for hydration brand Liquid I.V., the podcast Up and Vanished partnered with the company to create a custom segment that blended seamlessly into the show’s narrative. Host Payne Lindsey discussed using the product during the show’s field production, reinforcing the message with a personal and practical example.

The authenticity of Lindsey’s message not only improved brand recall but also created a stronger emotional connection with the audience—proving that storytelling and genuine use cases can elevate advertising impact. Das called it a model example of how brands can integrate messaging naturally and effectively into audio content.

The study reinforces the idea that audio advertising is most effective when it moves beyond sponsorship to become a part of the story. Listeners are not just passive audiences; they form real connections with the voices they hear regularly. For advertisers, that bond represents a powerful opportunity to influence decisions and drive conversions.
