The FCC has updated the pre-sunrise and post-sunset operating times for AM daytimers after a 17-year suspension. This recalculation was necessary due to the U.S. Energy Policy Act of 2005, which altered local sunrise and sunset times by extending Daylight Saving Time. The Media Bureau had suspended the process due to errors in power levels from outdated calculations. New tools have now been implemented to determine these times accurately. AM stations seeking expanded operating hours must submit a letter request detailing their facility information and power reduction methods. The maximum power allowed is 500 watts, with adjustments based on interference risks.
