As the FCC debates rules on AI usage in political ads, nearly half of U.S. states have enacted or are considering laws to regulate AI and deepfakes in elections. Nineteen states, including Texas, California, and Minnesota, have laws targeting AI-generated content meant to mislead voters. Some states mandate that political ads using AI include disclosures. The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has expressed concerns about the FCC overstepping its authority, noting state-level efforts. Upcoming FCC decisions will consider public comments on the issue, with the final submission deadline set for October 11.
