Radio and TV join forces for news.

Connoisseur Media’s KXL-FM in Portland has entered a news partnership with Nexstar’s KOIN-TV, bringing the radio and television newsrooms together to expand coverage of local news, weather and information across radio, television and digital platforms. The partnership is effective immediately.

The arrangement gives KXL access to additional reporting resources while providing KOIN with another distribution platform for local journalism. Connoisseur Media says the two organizations will share information and deliver timely coverage to audiences throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington.

KXL has built its programming around news blocks during morning and afternoon drive along with syndicated talk programming. The new relationship is designed to strengthen that local-news component rather than simply add another syndicated information source.

KOIN General Manager Tom Keeler said the television station is “honored to align ourselves with an equally respected news provider on the radio spectrum, KXL.” Connoisseur Media Portland VP and Market Manager Mark Handwerger said the partnership will expand the reach of both newsrooms across radio, television and digital platforms. KXL Program Director Grant McHill said the arrangement will allow the station to expand its commitment to “fast, accurate and essential news” while combining KXL’s local-radio presence with KOIN’s reporting operation. The deal could provide a useful model for radio operators looking to supplement local news resources through television partnerships.
