Public broadcasters are urging the FCC to prioritize their inherently local content over commercial stations in an ongoing rulemaking process. The FCC’s proposed rule seeks to incentivize locally-oriented programming, and public broadcasters argue that their stations inherently serve local communities. PBS and America’s Public Television Stations (PTV) propose new rules to ensure that “qualified noncommercial educational stations” receive priority in FCC processes like license renewals. Their criteria include public ownership and community service. NPR has also submitted suggestions, advocating for enhanced support for noncommercial stations, particularly in rural areas, to expand broadcast capabilities and reach.
