NAB opposes new Commission DIRS/NORS ruling.

A new FCC rule proposes that all radio stations file reports in both the Disaster Information Reporting System (DIRS) and the Network Outage Reporting System (NORS) during emergencies. However, the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) argues against mandatory reporting. They believe it would hinder broadcasters’ ability to serve the public during disasters. The NAB emphasizes that broadcasters prioritize providing critical information in emergencies, and mandatory reporting could take away from this vital task. They also argue it wouldn’t significantly benefit the public and would burden stations, especially smaller ones with limited staff. The NAB suggests the FCC focus on actions that directly help stations in emergencies, such as securing fuel and communication access. They believe the current voluntary DIRS system is sufficient and propose simplifying the reporting process for mobile devices.
