Now that the president has signed the Orrin G. Hatch-Bob Goodlatte Music Modernization Act, its provisions are now a matter of law: it streamlines the music-licensing process to facilitate payments to rights-holders for streaming; it makes sure that the original artists for pre-1972 recordings are compensated fairly; and it improves royalty payouts for producers and engineers whose work is featured on satellite and online radio. The Act, which drew unanimous votes in both houses of Congress, also drew praise from the radio industry: NAB president/CEO Gordon Smith noted, “This important legislation will benefit songwriters, legacy recording artists, producers, digital streaming services, and music listeners.”
