It’s all about the local.

NAB President Curtis LeGeyt emphasized the crucial role of local television and radio stations in combating online misinformation during a Senate AI Insight Forum. Addressing concerns about AI using copyrighted content without authorization, LeGeyt highlighted its adverse impact on local journalism reinvestment. He called for a distinction between legitimate and AI-generated content, noting the challenge of balancing First Amendment rights amid AI’s information manipulation. LeGeyt expressed worry about the misinformation storm fueled by easy-to-use AI tools and lack of legal safeguards, with nearly 70% of Americans encountering fake news on social media. He praised broadcasters’ investments in fact-checking teams and cited long-form audio, like Audacy’s Looped In: Chicago and iHeartMedia’s Philadelphia Community Podcast, as a safe harbor. LeGeyt concluded by underscoring the forum’s importance in navigating AI’s power to ensure truth and transparency in journalism.
