Global Music Rights (GMR) has filed a lawsuit against Vermont Broadcast Associates (VBA), owner of seven radio stations in Vermont and New Hampshire, alleging copyright infringement. The lawsuit, seeking nearly $10 million in damages, is a result of VBA’s alleged failure to accept GMR’s long-term license offer, following the resolution of a 2016 legal battle with the Radio Music License Committee (RMLC). GMR claims that VBA continued to play GMR-controlled songs without a proper license, playing 66 songs over 1,600 times in a five-year period. The maximum penalty under federal copyright law is $150,000 per song. GMR’s General Counsel emphasized the importance of radio stations obtaining proper licenses to ensure creators receive due compensation, stating that legal action is a last resort. VBA is accused of ignoring communications, including a cease-and-desist letter, from GMR.
