Genius move #3: Screw up your biggest market.

After over 50 years of all-news programming, New York City’s WCBS 880 AM will transition to ESPN New York under Good Karma Brands, starting August 26, 2024. This change, driven by challenges in the news industry, marks the end of WCBS’s all-news format. Audacy, which retains ownership, will focus its news efforts on 1010 WINS. The station will be rebranded as WHSQ-AM, pending FCC approval. Good Karma, already owning WEPN-AM, will continue broadcasting New York Mets games on 880 AM. A special broadcast will commemorate WCBS 880’s legacy before the format shift. Editor’s $0.02: I was living in the New York area when ‘CBS really cooked; now I’m back, and although the station isn’t what it used to be, it’s still a standard in radio journalism. So instead of operating two all-news outlets in the market—a brilliant move in itself—the geniuses at Audacy are LMA-ing ‘CBS to a company that will compete with another Audacy station (WFAN). You can’t make this stuff up.
