FEC nixes AI oversight.

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) has decided not to regulate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in political advertisements. Despite a petition from Ralph Nader’s group, Public Citizen, calling for rules against deceptive AI content like deepfakes, the FEC determined it lacks the statutory authority and technical expertise to do so. The decision follows public commentary, with most stakeholders supporting regulation. However, the FEC cited concerns over free speech and the limited current use of AI in campaigns. While the FEC opted out, the FCC is considering regulations on AI in political ads, though implementation might be delayed until after the 2024 election.
