FCC releases updated digital audio broadcasting power rules.

Commercial FM stations operating with hybrid digital operations gain expanded authority to adjust digital power levels under streamlined notification procedures published by the FCC. The updated rules allow eligible stations to increase their digital effective radiated power without submitting complex engineering studies or waiting for individual administrative approvals, provided they meet clear short-spacing criteria designed to protect adjacent channel analog signals.

For small and medium-market operators, this regulatory shift simplifies the process of extending digital coverage footprints to match existing analog coverage areas. Station general managers and chief engineers can now upgrade signal penetration into steel-and-concrete structures and suburban fringe markets without incurring substantial legal and consulting expenses. Commercial operators should review their existing transmitter plant capabilities and coordinate with equipment vendors to evaluate whether immediate power elevation makes operational and financial sense for their clusters.
