FCC chairman grilled about Net Neutrality. Chairman Pai received a letter from four Democratic members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee—Ranking Member Frank Pallone (D-NJ), Communications and Technology Subcommittee Ranking Member Mike Doyle (D-PA), Jerry McNerney (D-CA), and Debbie Dingell (D-MI)—pressing him for details about the way the Commission handled the whole Net Neutrality issue, and especially the “attack” that brought down the comment system. Regarding the latter, initially the Commission claimed that the agency was the victim of a denial of service attack, but the actual cause was an overload created by a feature story on Net Neutrality by John Oliver on his weekly HBO program. The quartet of representatives are alleging “misrepresentation” by the chairman and the staff; the letter says, “Such actions constitute a wanton disregard for Congress and the American people.”
