The FCC has voted to adopt a Report and Order outlining new Emergency Alert System (EAS) testing procedures, reporting of false alerts, and public service announcements. Under the new rules, state and local officials would be able to conduct “live code” EAS tests, using the same alert codes and processes as for actual emergencies; the rules would require additional configuration to prevent false alerts and to report any that slip through; and would permit the use of the EAS alert tones in PSAs (with appropriate disclaimer).
