FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel plans to introduce a new Missing and Endangered Persons (MEP) event code for the Emergency Alert System (EAS) to better address alerts for individuals who don’t qualify for AMBER Alerts. Scheduled for a vote on August 7, the MEP code aims to improve visibility for missing and endangered indigenous persons, who are disproportionately affected by violence and disappearance. The MEP code will work like AMBER Alerts, utilizing radio and TV broadcasts to mobilize public attention and complement existing systems, such as the Ashanti Alert. This initiative follows collaborative efforts involving Tribal Nations and federal agencies.
