Edison Research’s Share of Ear data reveals a substantial shift in US radio listening habits since 2015. The proportion of radio listening from streams among individuals aged 13 and above has more than doubled, rising from 6% to 13%. While all age groups exhibit a similar increase in streaming, Millennials and Gen Z lead in usage. Surprisingly, even the 55 and older age group now accounts for 9% of their radio listening via streams. Despite streaming’s growth, in-car radio remains dominant, with only 1% of in-car radio listening done via streams. The evolution of dashboards into visual and gaming entertainment hubs could alter this dynamic. This trend emphasizes the significance of a robust mobile presence for content providers navigating the changing audio landscape, as seen in Edison’s 2022 data where phone audio surpassed traditional radio listening.
